  • Code Geass R2: A Revelation

    Not as planned?

According to http://trainwreck.ggkthx.org/2008/08/19/taniguchi-on-geass-not-as-planned/, the Code Geass R2 that we're seeing right now (love it or hate it) was not the originally intended story for the series.  And considering how excellent it's been since the last fanservice episode, I'm actually surprised.  But at the same time, I can see how it makes sense since we're not seeing plenty of things that were started in season like, Suzaku's apparent relation to Geass and Kallen's brother and father.  I'm going to hold off judgment until we see where it actually ends up at the end--we still have 6 episodes as I write this--but it's obvious there are some loose ends that won't be tied up, and I think that's a shame.

I have to wonder what the original plan for the series was.  Ending it with 24-25 would have been horrible.  It's an excellent cliffhanger, but not an end to the story.  Obviously Taniguchi had plans for where he wanted things to go since the staff had to scrap it and start over--and apparently that's where Rolo comes in, the bastard--and it's a shame we won't get to see them.  The difference in quality in season 1 over season 2 makes a little more sense with this in mind.

However, I've really been enjoying the last several episodes and can't wait to see where things are going.  I'm still hopeful for my team up between Lelouch and Suzaku before the end, so we'll see.  Hopefully the actual ending to R2 will be somewhat close to what was originally planned.  But I suppose we'll never know.  Too bad.

  • Anime Expo News, Day 1

Today was filled with happy fangirl news from Anime Expo.  A few bits of news I'm excited about:

Gundam 00 will air on Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday block starting November 17th.  It will be dubbed (Ocean Group) and air two episodes a week. (ANN)

I think it's great that 00 is airing on Sci-Fi.  I know some people wanted it to go to CN, and more specifically Toonami, as [as] has no intention of airing Gundam ever again.  However, SEED was a big flop on Toonami and that is one of the more accessible Gundam.  Now, I'm no Gundam expert--far from it--but I can tell that 00 skews older than SEED did and Sci-Fi's demographic is much older than Toonami's.  Not to mention, Toonami would have edited the hell out of 00.  I just don't see the 6-11 year old boys connecting with 00 like the audience of Sci-Fi potentially can.  I think this is a great time for Gundam to reboot in America and 00 is a great show to do it.   I'm really looking forward to that.  With the second season airing in October, we'll be able to catch the new episodes in Japanese and the older episodes in English come November.  Awesome ^_^

FUNimation announces the main cast for Ouran High School Host Club: (ANN)

    Caitlin Glass as Haruhi Fujioka
    Vic Mignogna as Tamaki Suou
    Greg Ayres as Kaoru Hitachiin
    J. Michael Tatum as Kyoya Ohtori
    Luci Christian as Mitsukuni Haninozuka
    Todd Haberkorn as Hikaru Hitachiin
    Travis Willingham as Takashi Morinozuka

I think the majority of Ouran fans wanted Vic to play Tamaki, so this is hardly unexpected, but I do admit I squee'd when it was announced anyway.  He just has that right, lively energy that Tamaki possesses while being able to be serious when the situation calls for it.  I can't wait.  Travis is a great choice as Mori as well, though he doesn't speak too much.  I'm a little unsure about Caitlin Glass as Haruhi (I had her pegged as Renge, who will actually be played by Monica Rial) since she has a pretty feminine voice and Haruhi has to pass as a guy; granted it's a feminine guy, but still a guy nonetheless.  But FUNi hasn't let me down yet, so I'll trust them.  I'm not as familiar with the other actors, but overall I'm pleased with how it's looking.

It's also going to be released in two box sets, 13 episodes each, with the first being released on October 28, 2008.  I was totally willing to shell out for singles since Ouran is awesome like that, but box sets are always preferable.  So happy ^___^

FUNimation picks up 30+ ADV Titles, Including Sgt. Frog (ANN)

On the heels of picking up a bunch of Geneon's titles, FUNi now picks up a bunch of ADV's titles, which doesn't look good for them.  I have mixed feelings on this matter.  I absolutely love FUNi and I'm glad to see them doing so well.  They have become the master of the Grab License no Jutsu in the last few days it seems.  But at the same time, this doesn't bode well for ADV and I don't want them to go out of business.  However, I may pick up the D.N.Angel set earlier than planned, you know, just in case.  I'm also glad that FUNi got its hands on Sgt. Frog because I've been curious about it but it's been in limbo for so long, I thought I might never get the chance to check it out.  But with FUNi behind it, I'm more likely to do that.

The Gurren Lagann dub cast has also been announced.  (ANN)

I have yet to catch TTGL, but have heard nothing but good things about it, so planned to check it out when it hits Sci-Fi later this month.  However, now that I know Yuri Lowenthal is voicing the lead, it becomes imperative that I check it out since, you know, I'm a total Yuri Lowenthal fangirl.  Also, I like the work of a lot of names on the cast list, so I'm looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about on the 28th =]

    ----

I'm most interested in FUNimation's panel tomorrow.  I'm hoping that they license Vampire Knight, though with everything going on, even if they have, it wouldn't surprise me if it was announced at Otakon.  But with everything they've done that's made of epic win lately, I can't wait to hear what they have to say at their panel.

Also, I'm keeping up with my AX news at Toon Zone.  I'm a member there (purplehairedwonder) and find it to be a great community for animation lovers in general.  Check it out.

  • Summer Anime 2008

With the summer anime season just getting started, I thought I'd make a note of the shows I plan on checking out.  Looking through various summer previews, I was struck by how few shows interest me this season.  Though with my backlog, I suppose that's not a bad thing.  Anyway, I plan to watch and possibly blog:

    Chocolate Underground

    Airs: June 12, 2008
    Episodes: 13
Summary:  An internet-aired anime based on the novel Bootleg by Alex Shearer. In the series, the Good For You party passes a law that forbids the consumption of chocolate after 5 in the evening appropriately called the Chocolate Prohibition Law. It prohibits all sweet things, including chocolates, because they are harmful to one’s health. Two boys, Huntley and Smudger, stand up to fight against the law. With help from Louise and other friends, they begin to bootleg chocolate. (THAT)
Thoughts: Sounds like a fun premise and with the episodes only running 3 minutes a piece, I don't see any reason not to check this out.  Not to mention it's done by Production I.G., which is generally made of win.

    Natsume Yuujin-chou
    Airs: July 7, 2008
    Episodes: Unknown
Summary: Natsume Takashi has the ability to see spirits, which he has long kept secret. However, once he inherits a strange book that belonged to his deceased grandmother, Reiko, he discovers the reason why spirits surround him. Containing the names of these spirits, a binding contract was formed between the spirits and the owner of the book. Now, Natsume is determined to free the spirits and dissolve the contracts. With the help of a spirit cat, his days are filled trying to return the names to these spirits. (ANN)
Thoughts: Sounds fun.  I tend to enjoy series about demons and all that fun supernatural stuff, so this looks like it could be a fun ride.  Makes me think a little of Amatsuki (which I'm currently watching) with the demons, so I just hope it gets subbed more quickly than Amatsuki has.

    World Destruction

    Airs: July 7, 2008
    Episodes: 13
    Summary:
Spin-off of the yet to be released game of the same title by SEGA. The game centers on a youth named Kirie Irunisu who secretly possesses the power to destroy the world. He is forced to join a party that aims not to save the world, but to eradicate it and start anew. (THAT)
Thoughts: I'm not normally into shows based around games, but this sounds like it could be interesting.  Doesn't hurt that it's a Production I.G. series and that Mamoru Miyano (Tamaki, Ouran; Setsuna, Gundam 00) Maaya Sakamoto (Haruhi, Ouran) are lending their voices, either.

    Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
    Airs: July 10, 2008
    Episodes: Unknown
    Summary:
Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu centers around Yūto Ayase and Haruka Nogizaka. Yūto is seemingly ordinary, but Haruka is attractive, intelligent, and rich, which prompts other students to idolize her and even give her French nicknames like "Nuit Étoile" (The Silver Star of the Night) and "Lumière du Clavier" (The Shining Princess on the Piano). One day, Yūto wanders into the school library in order to return a book and accidentally stumbles upon Haruka's deepest, darkest secret: she is a diehard fan of anime and manga, in other words, a regular otaku. Promising Haruka to keep this a secret, Yūto becomes her advisor and confidente of some sort and hangs out with her more, though earning some viciously envious glares from his fellow schoolmates. (ANN)
Thoughts: This sounds like it could be very cute.  However, I will not be surprised if I end up dropping it, either.  It's just going to depend on how it's executed.  But I like the sound of the premise so will check out a few episodes to see how it is.

    Blade of the Immortal

    Airs: July 13, 2008
    Episodes: Unknown
Summary: Manji is a crass, violent samurai with a special ability: he cannot die. Cursed with immortality by the nun Yobikuni as punishment for his ruthless deeds, he has grown weary of his ageless life. The only way to lift the curse is to slay 1,000 evil men. So Manji wanders Japan, shedding the blood of the wicked on his quest to finally die. (ANN)
Thoughts: I've heard good things about the manga but have never tried to get into it.  However, this seems like a good opportunity to finally see what all the fuss is about.  The concept sounds intriguing, so I'm definitely looking forward to this.

  • Code Geass R2 11

Hearing that Milly is safe relieves everyone at Ashford.  Shirley was especially worried, so Lelouch offers her a handkerchief.  Rolo then asks to talk to him and they make their way to the secret base of operations where Rolo tells him that he is being too friendly.  However, Lelouch replies that he was instructed to keep personal relationships running smoothly, but Rolo thinks he is overdoing it.  Lelouch removes his mask and reveals himself to be Sayoko and she says she understands.  Vilettta then informs them that Schneizel has arrived at the Chinese Federation/Black Knights battle.  Meanwhile, Suzaku appears in the same area where Kallen is being held captive.

The Chinese Federation then begins attacking, which Zero recognizes as a sign that the Eunuchs have given up on the Empress.  Xingke tries to stop them, but the Eunuchs overrule him, declaring that they will bury the current Empress and use a new one.  Furious, Xingke tries to attack but the Tristan interferes.  Zino tells him that he owes him something for defeating the Guren.  Todo, Asahina, and Chiba arrive at the battle.  C.C. says she will go out in the Akatsuki Frame, but Lelouch tells her to come back if things go wrong.  Shortly after, Suzaku and the Lancelot arrive in the battle while Anya fights the Chinese "rebels."

On the Avalon, Nina says that the Mordred's Stark Hadron cannon would destroy the mountain tomb and the Black Knights in one shot.  However, the others tell her that they don't want to be the ones responsible for the death of the Empress.

As this is happening, Zero contacts the Eunuchs in an attempt to get them to stop the attack.  But when he invokes the Empress, the Eunuchs say she is replaceable.  Zero is disgusted that they would cede territory for Britannian titles, and that the Eunuchs don't care about the people.  They consider Zero an idealist for his feelings and think that there will always be people since they are like insects.  Zero is furious, calling it noble obligation.

Wanting the fighting to end, Tianzi runs away from Kaguya and makes it to the deck of the Ikaruga and yells for the fighting to stop.  Xingke sees that she will be killed and hurries to protect her, though the Tristant tries to hinder him.  He uses Shen Hu as a shield for her and tells her to run.  But she refuses to leave without him.  Xingke doesn't know if he can save her now that he's under fire and thinks that everything for the last six years was for her.

Out of options, he cries for someone to save the Empress, and to everyone's surprise, Zero, in a brand new Knightmare, answers the call.  The Knightmare Frame is Shinkirou and it uses the Gawain's Druid System.  It has the world's best defense as well as good offense with an energy blast that emanates from a crystal in its chest.  From the Avalon, Schneizel wonders why Zero came out with this specific timing.

Zero tells Xingke that he is pitiful for being betrayed by his countrymen and being unable to save one person.  However, he says that Xingke should now understand that only they can work together.  Zero knows that Xingke has the ability to lead a country, but Xingke doubts that Zero could change the course of the war with one Knightmare.  Zero replies that the course of war is not determined by tactics, but strategy.  It is then the Eunuchs find out there is an uprising in Shanghai and 14 other locations, including Beijing and Islamabad.  This was because Zero's conversation with the Eunuchs was leaked.  Xingke is shocked that Zero realized the Eunuchs would betray their people.  Schneizel, upon hearing the conversation, realizes that Zero already had this planned.  Zero, along with Diethard, had managed to cause a civilian uprising to coincide with the coup.

Meanwhile, C.C. and Chiba are fighting Anya.  As C.C.'s Akatsuki attacks the Mordred, the Geass mark on C.C.'s forehead suddenly reacts and she flashes back to Marianne and young Lelouch while Anya has her own reaction.   Anya's distraction allows Asahina to slash the Mordred's wing, which caused the Mordred to crash.

The remaining Black Knights then emerge and Schneizel orders a retreat.  Because a country is defined by its people and the Eunuchs have lost the support of their people, they no longer qualify as representatives of the Chinese Federation in Britannia.  Lelouch isn't surprised that Schneizel called for the retreat but wonders what the Emperor would have done in his place.

On the main Chinese ship, Xingke has executed the Eunuchs.  However, when Zero arrives to retrieve Kallen, Xianglin tells him that Kallen was given to the Knight of Seven.  Lelouch is angry because he thinks that Suzaku wants to take everything he cares about from him.  Instead, he swears to rescue Kallen.

Meanwhile in a location far away, Bartley and his men have been summoned by V.V. because they were the ones who first reconstructed Jeremiah to reproduce C.C.'s power.  They are to make the final adjustments to Jeremiah now, and he thinks that it should be an honor for them.

The next day, Xinkge and Tianzi are reunited on the deck of the Ikaruga and promises to protect her forever.  Diethard thinks they should announce that the engagement has been annulled and suggests to Zero that they should have her marry someone Japanese instead.  Kaguya strongly disagrees, saying that this is a matter of love rather than politics.  C.C. and the other women take Kagauya's side, and Zero earns a reprieve from making a decision when Tamaki appears.  Under the guise of speaking with Tamaki about his position, Lelouch calls Shirley.  Shirley wants to talk to him about Milly's graduation, but Lelouch asks her about breaking up a couple that doesn't want to be.

Shirley tells him that love is power and you always think of the person you love and you would go far beyond anything for that person.  Lelouch realizes that his feelings for Nunnally are like that.  Understanding a bit better, Zero decides against a marriage and tells Tianzi that her future is hers.  Diethard argues but Zero says that their power comes from the heart.  Xingke tells Zero he thinks he understands him a little more now, and they shake hands.

Back at Ashford, Shirley is in the library and thinking that Lelouch has been acting strange lately.  Sayoko, dressed up as Lelouch, just emerged from the secret base and Shirley is dangerously close to seeing the entrance, so Sayoko kisses her.

Meanwhile, Lelouch and C.C. reach their quarters and Lelouch tells C.C. that he's returning to Area 11 for awhile since the uprising of the people keeps him from worrying about the Chinese Federation.  And now he can focus on the original goal of the religious organization that creates and studies Geass users.  Having control of this organization would cause him to surpass the Emperor when it came to Geass.  C.C., though, tells him that the organization is carefully hidden.  Every time the leader changes, so does the location, and she heard from the leader that came after her--V.V.--that the current location was in the Chinese Federation.  However, the Chinese Federation is huge and Rolo doesn't know the group's location either.  Lelouch, however, is sure there is a way to trace them, such as power supply or communication records.  C.C. thinks that Lelouch plans to find them using the power of the Chinese Federation.  Lelouch tells her to stay in the Chinese Federation to look for them and let him know when they find something out.

Returning to Japan, Lelouch is greeted by Rolo and Sayoko.  When asked about his absence, Sayoko replies that she's written up a report.  As they walk back, Lelouch tells Rolo that he needs something to use against the Knights of the Round since now he has to deal with the Tristan and Mordred as well as the Lancelot, which was enough trouble on its own.  When he gets back on campus, he runs into Shirley.  She is down and wants to talk about yesterday--which Lelouch doesn't know about yet--but they are interrupted by the last two people Lelouch wanted to see.

Zino and Anya are wearing uniforms as they have enrolled in Ashford as well.

The wrap-up of the fight was pretty badass here.  Lelouch leaking a conversation where the Eunuchs basically hang themselves was brilliant.  I'm not surprised Xingke and Lelouch ended up allies after all, since Xingke has been painted a good guy at this point.  Lelouch's knew Knightmare is pretty kickass too, though I couldn't help but think of Death Note when he activated it, what with all the flourishing.

I'm still waiting for Suzaku to actually get his character back.  Turn 8 did a really nice job of giving him some development for season 2 and he's had about four lines per episode since.  It's kinda annoying to see him randomly glare at Kallen or give a random line for fighting when he is a main character.  Hopefully that turns around soon, since this was admittedly more of a Lelouch-centric time.  But still... main character and all.

Also, going into this episode I was expecting some huge fanservice debacle the way people were talking about it.  Turns out out it really wasn't that bad.  Kallen was put in a compromising position a few times but they were blink-and-miss-it.  The big offender was obviously C.C. talking strategy with Lelouch in her underwear.  I mean, really?  Was that absolutely necessary?  Good grief.  And with next episode being an Ashford episode, I can only assume the fanservice will increase dramatically.  I just hope that means stuff is going to get real intense afterwards, since that seems to be the pattern following more light-hearted episodes.

Also, I could not stop laughing when  Anya and Zino appeared.  Lelouch's expression was priceless.  I absolutely adore Zino.  Seriously, he's awesome.  "Senpai!"  Bahaha.

As Chiko and Tome stand on the deck of the boat approaching the island, Chiko thinks about the movie preview and the jewel she thought Twenty Faces was supposed to have.  She is sure she will find clues about Twenty Faces on the island.  Meanwhile on the island, Ken is threatening the producer, asking about the jewel.  The man doesn't know anything and Ken is angry, knocking the man's head back into the wall.

The ship docks and one of the film crew greets them.  As they turn to leave, Tome tells Chiko that she has a bad feeling.  Chiko reassures her but Tome asks her to not go anywhere alone; to bring Tome with her wherever she goes.  Chiko thanks her and they start walking.  On the path to the house, a storm is brewing and their guide says that the island was used for some kind of research during the war.  He points out the old research facilities in the woods and tells them that the natives on the island were used in human experimentation.  Now there are only some old people left, which is why it's called "White Hair Island."  Chiko's aunt doesn't like the story, but their guide tells them it's just a story.  Ken suddenly appears on the path ahead, walking toward them and Chiko realizes that it's him.  However, he gives her a hand signal to not say anything, so they pass in silence but she's really happy that he's alive.  The guide doesn't recognize him as one of their own, but when Chiko turns around, Ken is gone.  Another man fro the film crew then comes running toward them and tells them that the producer, Sakami, was killed.  Not only that, but the jewel was stolen.

Later that night in the house where the film crew is staying, they are discussing what happened.  Their guide thinks that the man they passed on the path must have been the one to kill Sakami since he wasn't one of theirs.  Others think that the murderer could be among the film crew, since they are on an isolated island, which creeps everyone out.  And because of the incoming storm, the police won't be able to arrive until the morning.  Chiko's aunt thinks that a murderer on the island is a good opportunity to take out Chiko and take any possible blame off of her.

Chiko is looking out the window and sees a light in the woods.  It's Ken smoking a cigarette and Chiko comes out to find him.  She runs up to hug him, but he pushes her away.  Unsure of what to think, she tells him that she's glad he's okay, but instead he asks angrily when Twenty Faces is.  She tells him that she is looking for him too.  Bitterly, Ken tells Chiko that he has nothing left anymore.  It starts to rain and Chiko tells him once more that she is looking for Twenty Faces but that someone has been murdered and the jewel is missing.  However, she is still happy she got to see him.  Ken stalks off angirly and Chiko is left in the rain.

It rains all the next day, but the rain finally ends and thatnight Chiko is looking out the window as Tome prepares their beds.  Tome says the director wanted her to be in a film, but stops and comments that Chiko has been distant all day.  Chiko asks Tome to sleep with her, but Tome doesn't think it's appropriate, so Chiko says she'll sleep on the floor with Tome instead.  Tome curls up with Chiko protectively and promises to always be with her.  Outside the door, Chiko's aunt listens on unhappily.

Later that night, Chiko silently leaves their bed and goes off to search for clues about Twenty Faces.  As she looks for Ken's footprints in the forest, she notices a glow like the one from the missing jewel and follows it.  It leads her to the abandoned research facility.  She finds the entrance off a ledge and ends up following an underground passage that reminds her of Twenty Faces' hideout.   As she looks around the lab, she thinks Ken is there as well, but instead it's a woman with white hair.  She is wearing the jewel around her neck and tells Chiko she's been waiting for her.  The woman tells Chiko that there were two of the jewels initially; Twenty Faces had one and the woman had one.  The woman reveals that she was the one who murdered the producer and is now after Chiko.  The woman suddenly appears behind Chiko and when she backs away, finds her behind her once again.  She starts strangling Chiko and tells her that she will never win his heart.

Chiko kicks the woman in the stomach and manages to escape but when she tries to kick, the woman bends backwards unnaturally to avoid the kick.  None of Chiko's attacks cause any damage and the woman throws her around like a rag doll.  She says she is disappointed in Chiko.  She captures Chiko and ties her down on a dissection table, telling her that she was one of many to die on that table years before and now Chiko would share the fate.  A needle springs from her finger and as she closes in on Chiko's face, a knife suddenly embeds in the woman's back.

The woman looks up and Ken is standing there.  He tells Chiko that she has gotten rusty and demands if the woman summoned Chiko.  The woman says none of them were supposed to survive and this angers Ken and he attacks with his knife, but the woman uses inhuman movements to evade his attacks.  Her hand suddenly flies off and stabs Ken in the shoulder with his own blade.  A metal rope suddenly flies at the woman and she evades once more.  Chiko is sitting on a structure, having escaped while Ken distracted the woman.  The woman reattaches her hand and approaches Chiko.  She notices a strange look in Chiko's eye and starts laughing.  She sends her hand with the knife at Chiko, but Chiko easily avoids it.  She falls backward and kicks a box that was attached to a pulley.  It tightens chains that the woman was standing in the middle of and she is pulled upside down.

Chiko reaches the ground and approaches Ken and the woman notes that Chiko's eyes look just like Twenty Faces'.  Laughing, the woman says she has a lot of fun coming her way and suddenly pieces of a human puppet fall to the ground and the woman is gone.  Chiko, however, passes out and Ken carries her back toward the villa.  As he is walking, Ken also notices that Chiko's eyes looked like Twenty Faces' back then and he realizes that he had been training her to be his successor.  But when he hears Tome calling for her, he is forced to leave Chiko where she will be found.  He then leaves when everyone finds her.

As the ship sails away from the island, Chiko is standing at the back, watching it.  She remembers the woman telling her that she would never win his heart.  Her aunt then walks out and notices her.  Angry that she is still alive, she approaches her as if to push her overboard, but Chiko turns when she gets near and her aunt can't do anything.  Chiko glares at her as she walks back.

    ----

So, wow.  This episode definitely was intense.  I was glad to see Ken and Chiko reunite, though his reaction was a bit surprising.  It was obvious that it hurt Chiko since Ken was like a brother to her and he seemed to reject her.  However, the fact that he arrived when she was in trouble to save her proves that he still cares about her.  Hopefully those two will be able to stay together more since I love their interactions.

I wonder who exactly that woman was.  Not only was she apparently dead, she was obviously jealous of Chiko.  We know Twenty Faces was involved with some kind of research during the war, but what did that really entail?  The more we see, the more and more disturbing it gets.

Chiko was badass when she took the white-haired woman on as well.  The look on her face when she was sitting on that structure was awesome.  She looked very cold and efficient.  Ken seemed to realize Twenty Faces was training her to be his successor and people are after her because of it, so I have to wonder what is supposed to come of it.  Chiko doesn't know anything really about Twenty Faces, so how can she be his successor unless he reappears to teach her more?

So much good stuff.  I really cannot gush enough about this show.  I only wish more people were watching it.
