  • Anime Expo News, Day 1

Today was filled with happy fangirl news from Anime Expo.  A few bits of news I'm excited about:

Gundam 00 will air on Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday block starting November 17th.  It will be dubbed (Ocean Group) and air two episodes a week. (ANN)

I think it's great that 00 is airing on Sci-Fi.  I know some people wanted it to go to CN, and more specifically Toonami, as [as] has no intention of airing Gundam ever again.  However, SEED was a big flop on Toonami and that is one of the more accessible Gundam.  Now, I'm no Gundam expert--far from it--but I can tell that 00 skews older than SEED did and Sci-Fi's demographic is much older than Toonami's.  Not to mention, Toonami would have edited the hell out of 00.  I just don't see the 6-11 year old boys connecting with 00 like the audience of Sci-Fi potentially can.  I think this is a great time for Gundam to reboot in America and 00 is a great show to do it.   I'm really looking forward to that.  With the second season airing in October, we'll be able to catch the new episodes in Japanese and the older episodes in English come November.  Awesome ^_^

FUNimation announces the main cast for Ouran High School Host Club: (ANN)

    Caitlin Glass as Haruhi Fujioka
    Vic Mignogna as Tamaki Suou
    Greg Ayres as Kaoru Hitachiin
    J. Michael Tatum as Kyoya Ohtori
    Luci Christian as Mitsukuni Haninozuka
    Todd Haberkorn as Hikaru Hitachiin
    Travis Willingham as Takashi Morinozuka

I think the majority of Ouran fans wanted Vic to play Tamaki, so this is hardly unexpected, but I do admit I squee'd when it was announced anyway.  He just has that right, lively energy that Tamaki possesses while being able to be serious when the situation calls for it.  I can't wait.  Travis is a great choice as Mori as well, though he doesn't speak too much.  I'm a little unsure about Caitlin Glass as Haruhi (I had her pegged as Renge, who will actually be played by Monica Rial) since she has a pretty feminine voice and Haruhi has to pass as a guy; granted it's a feminine guy, but still a guy nonetheless.  But FUNi hasn't let me down yet, so I'll trust them.  I'm not as familiar with the other actors, but overall I'm pleased with how it's looking.

It's also going to be released in two box sets, 13 episodes each, with the first being released on October 28, 2008.  I was totally willing to shell out for singles since Ouran is awesome like that, but box sets are always preferable.  So happy ^___^

FUNimation picks up 30+ ADV Titles, Including Sgt. Frog (ANN)

On the heels of picking up a bunch of Geneon's titles, FUNi now picks up a bunch of ADV's titles, which doesn't look good for them.  I have mixed feelings on this matter.  I absolutely love FUNi and I'm glad to see them doing so well.  They have become the master of the Grab License no Jutsu in the last few days it seems.  But at the same time, this doesn't bode well for ADV and I don't want them to go out of business.  However, I may pick up the D.N.Angel set earlier than planned, you know, just in case.  I'm also glad that FUNi got its hands on Sgt. Frog because I've been curious about it but it's been in limbo for so long, I thought I might never get the chance to check it out.  But with FUNi behind it, I'm more likely to do that.

The Gurren Lagann dub cast has also been announced.  (ANN)

I have yet to catch TTGL, but have heard nothing but good things about it, so planned to check it out when it hits Sci-Fi later this month.  However, now that I know Yuri Lowenthal is voicing the lead, it becomes imperative that I check it out since, you know, I'm a total Yuri Lowenthal fangirl.  Also, I like the work of a lot of names on the cast list, so I'm looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about on the 28th =]

    ----

I'm most interested in FUNimation's panel tomorrow.  I'm hoping that they license Vampire Knight, though with everything going on, even if they have, it wouldn't surprise me if it was announced at Otakon.  But with everything they've done that's made of epic win lately, I can't wait to hear what they have to say at their panel.

Also, I'm keeping up with my AX news at Toon Zone.  I'm a member there (purplehairedwonder) and find it to be a great community for animation lovers in general.  Check it out.
